Shopify vs Shopify Plus: When Is It Time to Upgrade?

Upgrade to Shopify Plus when a specific capability pays for the price jump — not because you crossed a revenue milestone. In practice the case gets real somewhere past $1–2M a year in online sales, or earlier if you need checkout customization, native B2B, or multiple international storefronts. At roughly $2,300–$2,500 a month, Plus has to earn back around $28,000+ a year, and for many stores it clearly does — for many others it clearly doesn’t.

What does Shopify Plus actually give you?

The list that matters, stripped of brochure language:

  • Checkout extensibility — customize checkout UI and logic: custom fields, upsells, validation rules, address logic.
  • Native B2B — company profiles, price lists, payment terms, and rep-friendly ordering.
  • Expansion stores — additional storefronts for international regions or sister brands.
  • Higher API limits and automation tools like Launchpad for scheduled events and flash sales.
  • Negotiable payment processing rates at volume.
  • Dedicated support with faster escalation.

Worth saying plainly: standard Shopify has gained a lot in recent years — Functions, Markets, Flow. The gap is narrower than it was in 2020, which is exactly why you should upgrade on thresholds, not vibes.

What are the decision thresholds?

Signal Stay on standard Consider Plus
Online revenue Under ~$1M/year $2M+ and growing
Checkout Default checkout converts fine Tested ideas blocked by checkout limits
B2B Occasional wholesale via draft orders Meaningful wholesale share needing terms and price lists
International Markets on one store covers you Regions need distinct catalogs, payments, or ops
Operations Manual processes are manageable API limits or flash-sale scale actively hurting

If you’re checking one box, an app probably solves it cheaper. Two or more, and Plus starts paying for itself.

When does checkout customization pay for itself?

Do the arithmetic before you believe anyone’s pitch, including ours. At $5M in annual online revenue, a 1% relative lift in conversion is worth about $50,000 a year — more than Plus costs. At $800K in revenue, the same lift is worth $8,000, and Plus is a losing trade on checkout alone.

Two honest caveats. First, you need actual checkout hypotheses worth testing — trust badges and field re-ordering, gift options, post-purchase offers. Second, you need enough traffic to read the tests; below roughly $150K a month in revenue, most checkout experiments take too long to reach a conclusion.

There’s also the quieter math: negotiated processing rates. On $10M of card volume, even 0.15% off your rate is $15,000 a year back.

What about B2B and international?

If wholesale currently runs on spreadsheets, emailed invoices, and a prayer, Plus’s native B2B can justify the upgrade by itself: customer-specific price lists, net payment terms, and company accounts your reps can actually use.

International is more nuanced. Shopify Markets on a standard plan handles currencies, local domains, and duties well. You need Plus’s expansion stores when regions genuinely diverge — different catalogs, different payment providers, different fulfillment and ERP routing. Selling to Canada in CAD is not that. Running a distinct EU operation with its own assortment is.

When should you NOT upgrade?

  • Under $1M and hoping Plus will grow you. It won’t — it’s infrastructure, not demand. Spend the $28K on traffic and conversion work instead.
  • For prestige or support alone. Expensive comfort.
  • For one feature an app covers. Check the app store first; the ecosystem is deep.
  • While questioning the platform anyway. If a replatform is on the table, settle that first — our migration cost guide covers what a move actually runs.

And whenever you do upgrade: pricing varies by contract term and volume, so confirm current numbers with Shopify and negotiate — nothing about the first quote is final.

FAQ

What does Shopify Plus cost in 2026? It starts around $2,300 per month on longer-term agreements and about $2,500 on shorter terms, with custom pricing at high volume. Confirm current terms directly with Shopify before you model ROI.

Do I lose anything moving from Advanced to Plus? No features go away — your theme, apps, and data carry over. You gain capability, cost, and some admin complexity.

Can I downgrade from Plus later? Yes. You’d give up Plus-only features — checkout customizations revert and B2B tooling goes away — so plan contract length around your confidence level.
